Watching the Solar Eclipse

It was finally here, the day of the solar eclipse! The forecast had called for a cloudy day, so Felicity and Haleigh hadn’t planned on watching the eclipse, therefore they hadn’t purchased any of the special glasses. Luckily on the day of the eclipse it was sunny, so they quickly made some pinhole projectors so they could watch it!

“Wow! I can see the sun through the pinhole! These things really do work!” Haleigh said as she looked through the hole in her pinhole projector.

“Yeah! Isn’t it cool?! I can’t wait until the eclipse starts!” Exclaims Felicity, lifting her own projector up to look through it.

“It’s starting! If you look really close you can see a little sliver of the sun is missing!”  Felicity said.

“Woah! That’s so cool!” Haleigh said, lifting her projector up to watch. “It looks like someone is trying to eat the sun!

“Actually, in ancient China people used to think that solar eclipses were caused by a dragon eating the sun, so they would bang drums and make loud noises to scare it away.” Felicity said. “Imagine how scary it must have been when the sun suddenly disappear back then. They didn’t have a way of predicting when the eclipses would occur.”

The girls continued to watch the eclipse and discuss their observations. The also had NASA TV playing in the background so they could hear the latest news and watch the eclipse from in the path of totality.

“It’s starting to get really dark out. Is it getting colder too or is it just me?” Asked Haleigh.

“No, it’s definitely gotten colder.” Felicity replied, “it looks like the moon is covering about three fourths of the sun! This is probably the darkest it will get here.”

The girls watched the eclipse in awe of the rare and beautiful event they were experiencing.

The light during the eclipse was unlike anything they has seen before. There was a dark blue-grey color to the shadows, it was almost like dusk, but yet it was only noon. It’s indescribable really, and pictures just don’t seem to do it justice.

The girls continued to watch as the moon kept moving on its journey around the Earth, slowly revealing more of the sun, until eventually they could no longer see the moon.

To end this post, here is a picture of my dog Oliver rocking his eclipse shades. Did you get to watch the eclipse? What did you think of it? I was super excited since I love all things outer space. It was a crazy, fun afternoon, running inside to watch from the path of totality on the NASA website, then heading back outside to view it myself, and to photograph my dolls watching it too!
